In January 2023, Quest Diagnostics announced that its ambulatory Quanum® Practice Solutions (formerly Care360) will be discontinued on December 31st, 2023, impacting Quanum Electronic Health Records (EHR), Quanum Electronic Prescribing (ePre), Quanum Practice Management (PM), and Quanum Revenue Cycle Management (RCM) software. Here’s what you and your practice need to know to prepare for the deadline and find a quality replacement to Quanum.

Change is inevitable in the complex healthcare market, and that includes the software systems that support independent providers, medical practices, and health networks across the United States. If you are a customer of the Quanum® Practice Solutions (formerly Care360) software suite from Quest Diagnostics, you likely already know that they will be sunsetting most of their ambulatory medical software products. This includes Quanum Electronic Health Record (EHR), Quanum Electronic Prescribing (ePre) and will impact Quanum Practice Management (PM), and Quanum Revenue Cycle Management (RCM).

If you are one of the more than 500,000 clinicians in the Quest network likely to be impacted by this big news, read on to learn how best to navigate what’s next and how you can seamlessly transition to a new software provider.

What Does Quanum’s Sunset Mean for Quest Customers?

Shifting from one clinical management and practice management software solution to another can be a tricky process without the right partner. It’s important that Quest Quanum® customers know all of the key details about the transition, as well as any challenges they should anticipate in finding an alternative:

Why is Quanum® Sunsetting at the End of 2023?

According to their official announcement from January 2023, the decision to discontinue ambulatory-focused Quanum® Practice Solutions was driven by broad changes in the healthcare space and in care delivery. Quest sites consolidation and and realignment: “By exiting the ambulatory segment, we hope to double our commitment to the important and growing area of health systems. By consolidating our efforts, we remain strategic in the allocation of our resources to provide the best solutions to our customers.”

Products

The Quest products which will be impacted are:

  • Quanum Electronic Health Record (EHR)
  • Quanum Electronic Prescribing (ePre)
  • Quanum Practice Management (PM)
  • Quanum Revenue Cycle Management (RCM)

Meanwhile, Quest products that will continue operation past the deadline are:

  • Quanum eLabs
  • Quanum Lab Services Manager
  • Quanum Enterprise Content Solutions

When is Quanum® Practice Solutions Sunsetting?

The deadline for current Quest Quanum® customers to transition to a new software system is December 31st, 2023, as this is when their Practice Solutions will reach end-of-life and go fully offline. Making a healthcare technology change can be challenging and will present a significant shift for many healthcare providers who have been using the Quest ambulatory system for the past decade. To make sure your practice is fully prepared, it’s essential to understand how this platform sunset will impact your practice and what steps you should take to find a suitable alternative.

Quanum® (formerly Care360) customers will be required to transition to another solution and/or receive an export of their data prior to the 12/31/2023 deadline, however Quest Diagnostics will maintain MACRA/MIPS certification through the 2023 reporting period for the convenience of customers.

Finances

There have been notable changes to customer contracts: all auto-renew contacts ceased as of the announcement and all terms converted to month-to-month. This allows customers to more easily transition to a new software provider at any time during 2023.

How to Find a Quanum® Software Alternative/Replacement?

The Quest Diagnostics medical software end-of-life is a significant event that underscores the importance of having modern, well-supported healthcare technology in place. Finding a replacement is essential, but you shouldn’t pick just any software—make sure to find a platform who will be a true partner in your transition and who offers apples-to-apples software solutions to maintain your organization’s workflows.

Here are some of the criteria you should consider when selecting an alternative.

Selection Criteria for a Quanum® Replacement

1. Compliance and Security

Outdated software may expose your practice to legal and financial risks if it cannot meet the latest security and privacy standards. Compliance with healthcare regulations, such as HIPAA & EPCS, is non-negotiable. You should also keep an eye out for certifications like ONC-HIT and SOC-2 Type II.

2. Functionality

When beginning your search, identify if there are Quanum® (formerly Care360) features you no longer need, ones you would like to keep, or new ones you’d like to explore. Make sure to thoroughly compare the functionality of a new solution’s software against the needs you’ve identified and prepare questions for the vendors you interact with.

3. Patient Experience

Efficient EHR and practice management software is vital for providing quality patient care. A smooth transition to an effective system will help maintain the level of service your patients expect. Additionally, make sure you have explored the patient-facing side of a potential new solution, from the patient portal experience to the ease of scheduling, telehealth visits, and communications.

4. Training and support

Onboarding with a new system requires proper training and ongoing support from your software partner. It’s crucial to identify what level of support you’ll be able to receive, the average speed of issue resolution, and any fees associated with support. Having this information will give you peace of mind that you’ll be able to succeed with your new tools.

What Challenges Will Discontinuation Bring for Current Quanum® Customers?

Finding a Viable Alternative

The first challenge providers will face is identifying the right alternative software for their organization. Vetting for the right solution can be very time consuming, so it’s best that Quanum® customers begin their search as far in advance of the deadline as possible.

Keep reading to dive deeper into how you can find a good replacement for your practice, including selection criteria and examples of questions you can ask.

Navigating Data Migration

One of the primary challenges faced by Quest Diagnostics customers is the migration of their patient data, medical records, and financial information. Data security and integrity during this process is of paramount importance to maintain continuity in patient care and financial operations.

It’s important to note, as mentioned earlier, that the December 31st deadline is also the last date customers will be able to receive an export of their existing data from Quanum® (formerly Care360). You should request an export well in advance of this date to ensure a timely transition.

Learning a New System

Transitioning to new software means healthcare providers and staff will need to adapt to a new system, which may require training and support to ensure a smooth transition. This learning curve can impact productivity in the short term, so providers should adjust their schedules and expectations with this in mind.

Re-evaluating Costs

Evaluating the cost of adopting a new software system is crucial. Budget constraints can be a significant concern, so it’s essential to identify the total costs you’ll be managing, including implementation, licensing, and ongoing maintenance.
