Maryland: 2023 State EPCS Mandate
Is your software certified? The deadline was Jan 1st, 2023.
RXNT Will Help You Comply With EPCS in Maryland
On January 1st, 2023, Maryland enforced the electronic prescription of "controlled dangerous substances"—like Schedule II–V medications—to pharmacies in Maryland state. Electronic Prescribing for Controlled Substances (EPCS) mandates and legislation is crucial to curb the opioid epidemic and safely prescribe. As of November 2022, only 57% of prescribers are enabled for EPCS.
Originally set for January 1st, 2022 the Maryland Department of Health (MDH) Office of Controlled Substances Administration (OCSA) moved the compliance deadline to 2023 in accordance with the Federal EPCS for Medicare delay outlined in CMS' 2022 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Final Rule. For more specific information about the original Maryland EPCS ruling, see the Senate Bill 166/House Bill 512.
Steven Anderson, President and CEO of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) said “The use of secure technology rather than paper prescriptions helps decrease prescription drug diversion and fraud and also has benefits in a situation like the current pandemic.“
Disciplinary action will be taken by the relevant and appropriate health occupations board for prescribers who are noncompliant with the legislation. Is your practice equipped to handle the mandate?
