Dive into our recap of RXNT’s time at AMBA’s 23rd Annual National Medical Billing and Coding Conference. The American Medical Billing Association held its annual conference at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, NV, from October 19th to 20th, 2023.
This past October 19–20th, RXNT’s best and brightest billing experts set up shop at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada for the American Medical Billing Association’s 2023 annual conference. This event brings together a tight-knit group of billing professionals to learn, share challenges, and discuss the future of the medical billing and coding industry, and talk “technology, regulation, and best practices” in the ever-changing community.
This year, Max Rodriguez (National Sales Director) and Jim Mayes (Regional Sales Manager) hit the show floor to give medical billing and coding professionals a firsthand look at all the new improvements to RXNT’s streamlined medical billing software.
Through insightful conversations with conference attendees and a multitude of stellar keynote sessions, Max and Jim brought back some of the most impactful issues affecting billing professionals in 2023. Here are some of their main takeaways from the conference:
What Were the Trending Topics and Insights From AMBA 2023?
The Need for Better Eligibility Checks and Discovery
Medical billers are facing a growing need for advanced insurance discovery and eligibility-checking features within their software due to the increasing complexity of healthcare insurance systems and constant changes in insurance plans, policies, and regulations. In 2023, billers need to access to cutting-edge tools that quickly and accurately determine a patient’s coverage, copays, deductibles, and pre-authorization requirements. Automating formerly-manual eligibility and claims tasks can streamline the billing process, reduce denials, and ultimately improve revenue cycle management.
Challenges in Psychiatric Billing
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, worldwide cases of anxiety disorders grew by 25% and depression by 28%. This has led to significant increases in patient demand for mental health care; Laurie Bouzarelos, Owner and Consultant at Provider Solutions, led a breakout session on “Coding & Billing for Psychiatry and Outpatient Mental Health Providers,” which provided insight into this unique area of medical billing. Psychiatric billing poses many complexities for billers and coders due to evolving regulations, variable coverage policies, and the need for precise documentation, making it imperative for professionals to learn how to navigate this nuanced landscape and ensure accurate reimbursement.
Compliance and Legal Concerns
With a continually changing regulatory landscape, such as the transition to the ICD-10 standard in 2015 or the upcoming ICD-11 coding standard in ~2025, the medical billing and coding community is prioritizing best practices around compliance to protect patients and prevent fraud. Medical billers and coders continue to play a pivotal role by ensuring healthcare providers operate ethically and within legal boundaries. With the continued expansion of telehealth services, ongoing fallout from the opioid epidemic, and more changes to the delivery of healthcare, ensuring high standards around compliance is more critical than ever.
